Our three and a half months’ stay in Alaska is ended. Dean kept saying why does time go so fast, we agree. It was a whirlwind of playing with and transporting the kids. Lots of silliness and crafting and games. We got Dean his first real Library card and he has been reading ever since. We recommend, Kung Pow Chicken and his side kick Egg Drop and Captain Underpants and anything with dragons! We have all developed a fondness for Grizzley and Lemmings on Netflix and Puffin Rock still has its gentle, calming influence. June was hot and sunny everyday until after July 4 weekend. Fires all over the state and drought. Then the skies opened up and continued most of the time for the remainder of our visit. Enough times between rains to still enjoy outdoors.
Pat and
Chuck took a trip to Seward and met up with Brenna, Zach and kids. We then went to Homer, Alaska for 4 days and
enjoyed the ocean and small town treats.
We had a day at the State Fair and as it was an adult day, we started
off with a champagne toast, ate homemade cannoli’s and watched the pigs
race. Brenna and Zach’s neighbor won the
giant pumpkin contest, one was over 2000 lbs.
Four days RV camping in Denali brought spectacular fall colors,
thousands of open acres, valleys and mountainsides, of brush growth from pale
peach to dark rusty red, bright gold birch against dark green spruce. We saw two bears and a couple caribou; but
most exciting and rare was an up-close view of a lynx.
It took
about a month to pull the apartment together to make it feel homey. Lots of garage sales and thrift shops and
family/friends donations. We finally
figured out how to keep the mattress from sliding off the foundation. We are keeping the apartment for the next
year and then see how it goes.
Today’s trip
was eastward to Tok, Alaska. Big game
hunting is in full swing: caribou, moose, sheep and bear open season. We have sunshine today and the bright gold of
the birch blend into the spruce and cover the valleys and mountainsides. Saw a moose cow and calf by the road. The larger glaciered peaks came out to greet
us and termination dust on the lower peaks.
We are staying in a small log cabin at the same place when we came up
and ate at Fast Eddy’s, lots of good food.
There is
relative silence tonight. Our apartment
is on a busy street so it’s strange to hear – nothing. Getting down into the 30’s tonight (50’s
during the day); will keep looking for northern lights. You can feel the land getting ready for
winter.
